New Delhi, Oct. 13 -- The Supreme Court has stayed trial proceedings in a criminal defamation case against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his alleged remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him "Choro Ke Sardar" and "Commander-in-Thief".
A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Aparesh Kumar Singh issued notice, returnable in four weeks, on Gandhi's plea challenging the Bombay High Court's September 8 order declining to quash the case.
"Issue notice returnable in four weeks. In the meantime, further proceedings before the trial court shall remain stayed," the bench ordered.
Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi appeared for Gandhi.
