Parmod KumarNew Delhi, July 21 -- The Supreme Court on Tuesday agreed to hear a plea by the Shiv Sena (UBT) challenging Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla's decision recognising the merger of six of its Lok Sabha members with the Shiv Sena led by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, urging the court to intervene "to save our democracy" - a part of the basic structure of the constitution.
As senior advocate Devadatta Kamat mentioned the petition for an urgent listing on Wednesday or Friday, Chief Justice Surya Kant, heading a bench also comprising Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice Vipul M. Pancholi, asked what was the urgency.
