Bengaluru, Aug. 14 -- Congress candidate Salim Ahmed was on Friday elected Chairman of the Karnataka Legislative Council, securing 38 votes against 30 polled by the Opposition alliance candidate.
The election was conducted at the beginning of the day's proceedings by interim Chairman Puttanna. After the result was announced, members of the ruling and Opposition parties escorted Ahmed to the Chair and congratulated him, stressing the need for the presiding officer to function in a non-partisan manner.
Ruling party leader Yatindra Siddaramaiah congratulated Ahmed and said he had been associated with the Congress since his student days and had risen through various responsibilities entrusted to him by the party.
