Chennai, Sept. 6 -- A functionary of the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) was hacked to death by unidentified persons at Vannandurai in South Chennai on Sunday, triggering tension in the area.

The murder has taken place on the eve of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay's reply to the debate on the demand for grants for the police, fire services and rescue department--since he holds the Home portfolio--in the State Assembly, which would resume its sitting tomorrow after a 3-day festival and weekend holidays.

Acting swiftly, Shastri Nagar police have arrested five people in connection with the murder.
