Panchkula/New Delhi, July 30 -- Rajya Sabha MP Rekha Sharma raised concerns about food wastage in Indian Railways and urged the Central Government to develop a safe system for collecting and distributing surplus edible food prepared for passengers.
She recommended that food meeting safety standards be provided to porters, sanitation workers, daily-wage labourers, and other needy individuals rather than discarded.
During Zero Hour in the Rajya Sabha, Sharma noted that Indian Railways serves millions of meals daily. Because food is prepared based on estimates, significant quantities often remain unused, even though they meet food safety standards.
