Shimla, March 30 -- Himachal Pradesh Education Minister Rohit Thakur on Sunday said the state government has accorded priority to the education sector by allocating Rs 9,666 crore in the budget, which accounts for about 18 per cent of the total outlay, despite financial constraints.

The minister said that Himachal Pradesh has made significant progress in education since 1947.

He stated that the literacy rate in the state, which was around seven per cent at the time of Independence, has now reached 99.30 per cent, a matter of pride for the hill state.

Thakur was addressing a gathering after inaugurating a newly constructed library at the Government Senior Secondary School in Sarog under the Theog Assembly constituency on Sunday.
