Gilgit, Aug. 1 -- Renowned British-Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja was confirmed dead in the powerful avalanche which struck Broad Peak in northern Pakistan, his climbing company confirmed on Saturday.
The avalanche struck on Thursday while an international expedition led by the 43-year-old climber was attempting to summit the 8,047-metre peak, cutting off all communication with the team, reports Dawn.
"It is with profound sadness and immense heartbreak that we confirm that Nirmal Purja tragically lost his life following the avalanche on Broad Peak," his company, Elite Expeditions, said in a statement on social media.
The company added that several other members of the expedition had also died.
