Nalgonda, July 3 -- BJP Telangana State president N Ramchander Rao on Friday described the 1975-77 Emergency as the "darkest chapter" in the history of Indian democracy and said future generations must be made aware of the suppression of democratic rights and press freedom during the period.

Speaking after unveiling the book "Nalgonda District Emergency-Era Fighters", authored by Chinta Muthyala Rao, Ramchander Rao said the Emergency was imposed by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to retain power after the Allahabad High Court invalidated her election.
