Panchkuja, June 18 -- The Ministry of Railways has amended its rules to make it easier and faster to open temporary and short diversion railway lines for passenger services, a move expected to speed up infrastructure projects and reduce procedural delays.

Under the new notification issued by the Railway Board, all temporary deviation lines, regardless of their length, and permanent diversion lines up to three kilometres in length will now be treated as "minor works".

In simple terms, whenever railway tracks need to be shifted temporarily during construction, bridge works, track doubling, or maintenance activities, the Railways often lay an alternative route known as a deviation or diversion line.
