Doha/Washington, July 10 -- Qatar will continue its role as a mediator between the US and Iran despite the recent flare up in tensions between the two nations, Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed Al Ansari said on Thursday.

Speaking during a panel discussion at the Chatham House London Conference titled "The New Geopolitics of the Middle East", Al Ansari said Doha remained committed to diplomatic engagement even as the war directly affects the region.

According to a statement issued by Qatar's Foreign Ministry, Al Ansari stressed that military action cannot provide a lasting solution to regional crises.
