Pune, Sept. 12 -- Veteran Congress leader and former party spokesperson Ratnakar Mahajan died at his residence in Pune on Saturday morning. He was 80.

Mahajan had been unwell for the past few days. His last rites were performed at the Vaikunth Crematorium in Navi Peth on Saturday.

Mahajan's death marks the loss of an erudite, composed and committed leader of the Congress.

He had served as chairman of the Maharashtra State Planning Board and had also headed the Lokbodhini organisation.

A doctor by profession, Mahajan was deeply influenced by socialist thought and entered the social sector driven by his ideological convictions.
