Mumbai, Sept. 11 -- Senior Congress leader and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan criticised nation's political and democratic institutions at the launch of veteran journalist Tulsidas Bhoite's book, raising concerns over the functioning of investigative agencies, the anti-defection law, electoral practices, media ownership and the judiciary.

Chavan said the country's political system today could hardly be described as a functioning democracy, arguing that institutions meant to protect democratic values have increasingly come under political influence. Citing Dr B.R. Ambedkar's warnings during the Constituent Assembly debates, he said even a good Constitution could fail if it was implemented by people who were dishonest. ...
