Bengaluru, July 25 -- State BJP President Vijayendra Yediyurappa on Saturday mounted a strong defence of former union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation, asserting that it was a "sacrifice in the interest of students" to prevent the Congress from exploiting the nationwide protests over alleged examination irregularities for political gains.

Addressing reporters here, Vijayendra claimed Pradhan stepped down voluntarily to deny the Congress an opportunity to "politicise and misuse" the students' agitation.

"Dharmendra Pradhan resigned on his own to prevent the unscrupulous Congress from further politicising and misusing the students' protest for its political ends," he said.
