Puducherry, April 9 -- In a historic first in its annals of electoral politics, a recored all time high of 90.35 per cent turnout was recorded as the single phase polling to elect the new 30-member Puducherry Territorial Assemby ended on Thursday evening.

The polling which commenced oin 1,099 booths at 7.00 AM in the morning, ended at 6.00 PM.

No major untoward incident was reported from part of the UT and the polling process that decided the fate of 294 candidates, including 40 women, ended peacefully.

Of the 294 candidates, the electoral fortunes of 253 in 25 constituencies in Puducherry district comprising Puducherry, Mahe and Yanam regions, 41 in the five constituencies of Karaikal district and 16 Independents were sealed in EVMs.
