Mumbai, June 3 -- A major political controversy has erupted in Maharashtra following the state government's decision to approve a loan waiver of up to Rs 2 lakh for farmers.
While the MahaYuti government claims the move will provide significant relief to millions of cultivators, the opposition has denounced the scheme, labeling it a deceptive political stunt and a cruel joke on the farming community.
During the cabinet meeting, the government announced the 'Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar Shetkari Karjmukti Yojana 2026,' aimed at waiving short-term crop loans disbursed between April 1, 2019, and March 31, 2025. The package also includes a Rs 50,000 incentive for farmers who have maintained a regular repayment record.
