Lucknow, March 15 -- A political controversy has erupted in Uttar Pradesh after the word "Pandit" was allegedly used in an objectionable context in the written examination for the state's Sub-Inspector recruitment, sparking criticism from opposition parties and even some leaders within the ruling party.
Leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have reportedly demanded an inquiry and action from the state government. Meanwhile, opposition parties have accused the government of insulting the Brahmin community.
Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Rai described the incident as a "new chapter of oppression against Brahmins". He alleged that the BJP, which rose to power with the support of the community, is now sidelining it.
