Jehanabad/Arwal, Aug. 4 -- Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) General Secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya Tuesday alleged that police excesses in the name of enforcing prohibition had reached alarming levels in Bihar, while the state government was targeting ordinary people instead of taking action against the liquor mafia.

During his visit to Jehanabad and Arwal districts, Bhattacharya met families affected by alleged police repression and violence. He expressed condolences to the families of Ragini Devi in Pakharpur and Tuntun Mahto in Haibatpur. He also met residents of Chaiti Pipar, who he said had faced feudal oppression, and attended a condolence meeting in Bhadasi to pay tribute to Tada detainee Churaman Bhagat.
