New Delhi, Sept. 19 -- Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday placed India's development model at the centre of the global climate debate, asserting that rapid economic growth and environmental sustainability can advance together and arguing that developing countries should not be unfairly burdened with responsibility for global carbon emissions.

Inaugurating the two-day International Conference on "The Future of Environment and Climate Dynamics" at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, Modi said India had made "exceptional progress" across environmental sectors over the past 12 years, with renewable energy playing a particularly important role in the country's efforts towards environmental protection.
