Kolkata, May 9 -- Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday marked a historic moment at the Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata by performing a "sashtanga pranam" before the people of West Bengal during the swearing-in ceremony of the state's first BJP government.

After stepping onto the stage, PM Modi paid floral tributes to Rabindranath Tagore and folded his hands before the poet's portrait, setting the tone for a landmark political event following the party's decisive victory in the state Assembly elections.

The ceremony coincided with Rabindra Jayanti on the 25th day of Baishakh, and political observers said the date for the swearing-in was chosen keeping the occasion in mind.
