Srinagar, July 14 -- Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Zuhaib Mir on Tuesday demanded a complete ban on liquor in Jammu and Kashmir, alleging that the increasing number of liquor outlets was harming society.

He said the National Conference-led government had the legislative strength to prohibit it.

Addressing a press conference, Mir, who is also the spokesperson of the party, said the issue had come to the fore after a liquor shop was opened in the Sempora area of Pantha Chowk, triggering protests by local residents. He claimed he was detained by police a day after participating in the protest.
