New Delhi, Aug. 10 -- Parliament on Monday cleared the Bankers' Books Evidence Bill, 2026, with the Rajya Sabha passing the legislation by voice vote, paving the way for a modern legal framework governing the use of bank records as evidence in courts and other judicial proceedings.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman moved the Bill for consideration and passage in the Rajya Sabha. The Lok Sabha had passed the legislation by voice vote on August 5 amid Opposition uproar.
The legislation repeals and replaces the Bankers' Books Evidence Act, 1891, updating a legal framework enacted more than 130 years ago to reflect the sweeping digitisation of banking and financial transactions.
