Colombo, Aug. 23 -- Devdutt Padikkal and Shubman Gill forged a century partnership to rescue India from an early wobble before Gill fell for 50 just before tea on the opening day of the second Test against Sri Lanka at the Sinhalese Sports Club here on Sunday.
India reached 187 for three in 52 overs at tea, with Padikkal unbeaten on 63 and Rishabh Pant yet to open his account.
Padikkal and Gill added exactly 120 runs before Asitha Fernando broke the partnership. Gill, who had brought up his half-century off 99 balls earlier, fell for 50 off 108 balls, hitting six fours.
