Hyderabad, July 1 -- Doctors at Osmania General Hospital have achieved a major medical milestone by successfully performing India's first five-organ multi-visceral transplant on a single patient in a single procedure.

The rare and highly complex surgery involved the simultaneous transplantation of the stomach, duodenum, pancreas, small bowel and right colon (large intestine) into a 30-year-old engineer from Sircilla. The operation continued uninterrupted for 36 hours and was successfully completed by the hospital's multidisciplinary medical team.
