Hyderabad, April 30 -- Doctors at Osmania General Hospital successfully performed a complex liver transplant on an 18-month-old boy suffering from a rare condition, giving him a new lease on life.
The infant, Afan, diagnosed with Glycogen Storage Disease (Type III), underwent a 14-hour surgery led by Dr Madhusudan.
The medical team transplanted a 240-gram portion of liver donated by the child's father into the boy, who weighs just 10 kg. Doctors confirmed that the child is currently stable and recovering well.
According to doctors, the rare genetic disorder prevents the body from converting stored glycogen into glucose, leading to severe complications such as low blood sugar, an enlarged liver, and muscle weakness. The condition had prog...
