Palakkad (Kerala), Aug. 13 -- An estimated five lakh Indians die every year while waiting for an organ transplant, highlighting the urgent need to increase deceased organ donation in the country, said Dr Naresh Purohit, Visiting Professor at the Kerala University of Health Sciences, School of Public Health.

Addressing a public awareness programme titled "Organ Donation: Gift of Life", organised by the Institute of Integrated Medical Science (IIMS), Palakkad, on the occasion of World Organ Donation Day on Thursday, Dr Purohit said nearly two lakh people require kidney transplants and around 50,000 need liver transplants every year, while thousands await heart and lung transplants.
