Bhubaneswar, June 22 -- In a major move aimed at preserving Odisha's linguistic and cultural identity, the state government on Monday decided to restore and standardise the English spellings of names of districts, sub-divisions, tahasils, blocks and urban local bodies in accordance with Odia phonetics.
A notification issued by the Revenue and Disaster Management Department stated that the existing English spellings of administrative units at 64 places across 26 of Odisha's 30 districts have been corrected and substituted with revised English spellings.
The changes will come into effect from the date of publication of the notification in the Odisha Gazette.
