Bhubaneswar, April 25 -- Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has called for greater public participation and innovation to strengthen the state's Panchayati Raj system, as his government focuses on rural development and natural resource protection.

Speaking at a state-level celebration of National Panchayati Raj Day in Balangir, Majhi said efforts were underway to safeguard water, land and forests while improving education, healthcare, employment and women's empowerment in rural areas.

He said Panchayati Raj institutions had evolved beyond implementation bodies and were now leading social and economic development, infrastructure creation and resource management.
