Bhubaneswar, May 20 -- In a major push to Odisha's blue economy ambitions, the State Cabinet on Wednesday approved a proposal to repeal the Odisha Marine Fishing Regulation Act, 1982 and replace it with a comprehensive new legislation aimed at modernising the marine fisheries sector, boosting seafood exports and strengthening coastal livelihoods.

The Cabinet approved the proposal of the Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Department for enactment of the Odisha Marine Fishing (Prohibition and Regulation) Bill, 2026, which seeks to create a modern, inclusive and technology-driven legal framework for marine fisheries governance in the state.
