Bhubaneswar, July 23 -- At least five persons were killed and two others sustained critical injuries after the SUV they were travelling in skidded off the road and plunged into a roadside pond in Odisha's Dhenkanal district late on Wednesday night.
The victims were returning home after attending a marriage function when the accident occurred near Chhatia village under Dhenkanal Sadar police limits.
Hearing cries for help, local residents rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation. They managed to pull out two survivors from the submerged vehicle, while the bodies of five occupants were later recovered.
The injured were admitted to the Dhenkanal District Headquarters Hospital, where their condition remains critical.
