Bhubaneswar, May 17 -- The opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Sunday urged the BJP-led Odisha Government to press the Centre for bringing petrol and diesel under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime, saying the move would help reduce fuel prices and ease the burden of rising prices of essential commodities.

In a statement, BJD spokesperson Dr Lenin Mohanty challenged Odisha BJP president and Rajya Sabha MP Manmohan Samal to persuade the Centre to implement the proposal which, he claimed, the BJP had advocated during the previous BJD government.

"The Chief Minister should write to the Centre seeking inclusion of petrol and diesel under GST. VAT on fuel should also be withdrawn," Mohanty said.
