Solan, Sept. 15 -- In a breakthrough that could reshape understanding of Himalayan paleogeography, a rich assemblage of Eocene marine fossils dating back 34 to 38 million years has been discovered in Nyoma, located in the high-altitude Changthang region of eastern Ladakh.

The discovery was made by veteran geologist Dr. Ritesh Arya, founder of the Tethys Fossil Museum Dharampur in Solan district, during an ongoing geological expedition across the region.

The haul is dominated by spiraled, Turritella-type gastropods, preserved alongside marine bivalves and oyster-like specimens. A preliminary biostratigraphic comparison links the assemblage to the classic Eocene Subathu Formation of the outer Himalayas.
