Agartala, Oct. 3 -- The eight states of the Northeast this year experienced a 26pc rainfall deficit during the Southwest monsoon from June to September.

A senior official from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) noted that the formal declaration marking the end of the monsoon season in the region has not yet been made.

In the previous year, the monsoon officially retreated from the Northeast on October 14.

The IMD requires five consecutive rainless days, the presence of an anticyclone in the lower troposphere, and diminished moisture levels before announcing the conclusion of the monsoon, which still has not transpired, according to the official.
