Niamey, Aug. 29 -- Niger's Defence Minister Gen. Salifou Mody said on Saturday that military activity in the capital Niamey has been brought under control and security forces had regained control of critical sites targeted during an apparent mutiny.
Mody's remarks were broadcast on national television after heavy gunfire and explosions were reported overnight and into Saturday morning around Diori Hamani International Airport, the Base 101 military facility and the Presidential Palace.
According to Mody, a group of soldiers had "broken away from military order" and attempted to detain some of their fellow soldiers at Base 101 before opening fire at several sensitive locations in the capital.
