Bhubaneswar, June 15 -- The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of a media report alleging that an elderly woman in Odisha's Sundargarh district died after enduring social ostracisation for nearly 12 years.

According to the report, the woman's family, residents of Mahuldiha village, continued to face social boycott over the years and reportedly received no support from fellow villagers even during her final rites.

The situation reportedly became so severe that the woman's daughter was unable to conduct the last rites with community assistance. The cremation was eventually carried out after intervention by the local administration with support from some non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
