Shillong, April 30 -- A newborn baby girl who was buried alive allegedly by her mother was rescued by a schoolboy at a remote village under Ri-Bhoi district in Meghalaya, police said on Thursday.

The newborn was found buried near a school, and the school children passing by heard the child's wails from underneath the soil, Giri Prasad, the district police chief of Ri-Bhoi, said.

The infant was pulled out from the ground by the brave schoolboy who rushed the newborn to the Mawhati Primary Health Centre for emergency medical attention. The infant was subsequently referred to Nongpoh Civil Hospital, where she is currently undergoing treatment.
