Panchkula, Aug. 23 -- Getting a new telecom connection, replacing a SIM card or disconnecting a mobile connection will now involve stricter identity verification, with the government making biometric authentication mandatory at several key stages of a subscriber's interaction with telecom service providers.

Under the Telecommunications (User Identification) Rules, 2026, authorised telecom entities must carry out biometric identification before issuing a new telecom connection or SIM, making certain changes to subscriber details, disconnecting a connection and conducting re-verification where required.

Subscribers with an Aadhaar number will be verified through the e-KYC process, while those without Aadhaar can use D-KYC.
