Siliguri, Aug. 20 -- Nepali Language Recognition Day, or Nepali Bhasa Manyata Diwas, was observed in different parts of Sikkim and North Bengal on Thursday with cultural programmes, meetings and rallies, highlighting theimportance of the Nepali language and its constitutional recognition.

The day marks the inclusion of Nepali in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution in 1992.

The occasion assumed a political dimension in Mirik, where the Naya Party Nirman Samiti observed the day by renewing the demand for a separate Gorkhaland state. Supporters took out a procession with the Gorkhaland demand as the central theme.
