Yavatmal, May 8 -- At least 102 farmers allegedly died by suicide in Maharashtra's Yavatmal district between January and May this year, farmer activist Kishore Tiwari claimed today, highlighting the worsening agrarian crisis in the Vidarbha region.

According to official district administration figures cited by Tiwari, Yavatmal recorded 21 farmer suicides in January, 28 in February, 24 in March, 27 in April, and four more cases during the first week of May 2026, taking the total number of suicides to 102 so far this year.

Tiwari alleged that the continuing incidents of farmer suicides were the result of mounting debt, crop failures, rising input costs, denial of institutional credit and inadequate government support.
