Srinagar, May 21 -- Amid outrage over the demolitions carried out in Jammu's Sidhra area, Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary on Thursday said the National Conference has historically worked to provide shelter and rights to people rather than demolish homes.

The Omar Abdullah government has already formed a committee to examine if there was any violation of the Forest Rights Act-2006 in the demolition of houses of tribal Gujjar families in Raika Bandi Sidhra.

Deputy CM Choudhary said that since 1947, whenever the National Conference formed the government in Jammu and Kashmir under leaders like Sheikh Abdullah, Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah, the party ensured housing and land rights for the poor and marginalised....
