Bengaluru, June 30 -- Karnataka BJP President Vijayendra Yediyurappa on Tuesday alleged that the Naregal assault was part of a "conspiracy to intimidate Hindus" and charged that the police were acting as "puppets" of the ruling Congress, accusing the state government of misusing the law enforcement machinery to protect the guilty and target victims.

Addressing reporters here, Vijayendra claimed the attack took place during the Kari Hunnime celebrations in Naregal after firecrackers were burst to scare cattle as part of the traditional festivities.

He alleged that several members of the Kuruba community, including Lohith Kurubar, Shivaraj, Jayappa, Nagappa, Mallappa and Ningaraj Kurubar, were brutally assaulted in the incident.
