Chennai, April 24 -- A misplaced euphoria and excitement is there about the 'historic voter turnout' of 85.15 per cent in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections which masks the ground reality of the voter cake shrinking, pushing the percentage higher with no remarkable jump in the actual votes cast.

Since the state has never recorded 80 percent turnout in either Assembly or Lok Sabha elections, from drawing rooms to street corner tea shops, the public discourse is about decoding this myth.

The present figure cannot be seen in isolation so as to conclude that this is the result of a desire for change.
