Hpa-an, April 28 -- Myanmar's military has heavily amped up its air and artillery strikes in the state of Kayin as resistance forces press their assault on what is described as the regime's last stronghold in Waw Lay, south of the key border hub of Myawaddy.

Fighters from the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) resistance group, along with allied groups, launched their offensive early Saturday, moving to encircle the Waw Lay command base.

Resistance sources said the position would likely have fallen already if not for sustained aerial bombardment and heavy shelling by regime forces, reports Irrawaddy.
