Munger (Bihar), June 2 -- Scientists have identified a banyan tree in Bihar's Munger district as the oldest known living banyan tree in the world, with radiocarbon dating indicating that a sampled section of the tree is around 700 years old.

Researchers from the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences (BSIP), Lucknow, conducted the study using radiocarbon dating techniques and recently published their findings in an international scientific journal.

The research began in 2022 after a team comprising scientist Dr Trina Bose and research scholar Avneesh Mishra visited Munger at the invitation of the Bihar Forest Department to determine the age of the giant banyan tree located within the premises of an Indian Tobacco Company (ITC) property....
