Aizawl, July 31 -- A local court in Mizoram's Serchhip district has sentenced a Thenzawl resident to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment after finding him guilty of sexually assaulting a minor under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
R.T. Lalhlimpuia was convicted by Additional District & Sessions Judge Julie Lalrinzami under Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012, in connection with the sexual assault of a minor girl, court sources said on Friday.
The conviction was recorded on July 17, while the sentence was pronounced on Thursday. Besides the prison term, the court imposed a fine of Rs. 20,000. Failure to pay the fine will attract an additional one-year imprisonment.
