Srinagar, Aug. 25 -- Kashmir's chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Tuesday recalled the events surrounding "Operation Jamia Masjid" of August 25, 1989, saying the memories and scars of the incident remain even 37 years later.
In a post on X, Mirwaiz said Srinagar's historic Jamia Masjid had endured "assaults, sieges, closures and repeated attempts to silence its pulpit", and alleged that its sanctity was violated during the operation, with worshippers detained and the mosque's sacred space desecrated.
"Thirty-seven years on, the scars remain," Mirwaiz said, describing the mosque as Kashmir's "spiritual heart", a witness to its history and a voice for the faith, dignity and rights of its people.
