Naypyidaw, April 6 -- Gen Min Aung Hlaing has been elected president of Myanmar, post the elections of 2025, further formalising his grip on power five years after he led the 2021 military takeover that removed the democratically elected civilian government of Aung San Suu Kyi.

The vote in parliament, announced by Speaker Aung Lin Dwe, saw Min Aung Hlaing secure 429 out of 584 votes, defeating the other two nominees by a wide margin, who will now serve as vice presidents. Rubbished as a sham and heavily engineered election, Min Aung Hlaing's victory surprised no one, given the dominance of military-backed parties and the presence of army-appointed lawmakers in the legislature.
