Shillong, July 30 -- The Meghalaya government has proposed to the Centre to acquire border land within 150 yards of the India-Bangladesh border to facilitate seamless border fencing and bolster security in vulnerable areas.
Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home, Prestone Tynsong, said the state government has written to the union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to consider outright acquisition of land to erect a fence to complete the border fencing.
Landowners in a certain stretch of the India-Bangladesh border in the Khasi and Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya have opposed fencing 150 yards away from the Zero Line, arguing that they would lose vast tracts of their agricultural land.
