Shillong, Aug. 14 -- The Meghalaya Cabinet on Thursday approved a draft resolution opposing all forms of uranium mining and related activities in the state.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said the resolution will be introduced during the upcoming Autumn Session of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, which begins on August 24.
"We have appealed to the central government that any form of mining or any kind of activity in relation to uranium should not be done in the state of Meghalaya," Sangma told reporters.
The cabinet approval assumed significance in the wake of demands by the Khasi Students' union (KSU) to adopt an assembly resolution rejecting uranium mining in the state.
