Shillong, Sept. 10 -- The United Democratic Party, the second-largest party in the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA), has called an emergency meeting of its Central Executive Committee on Friday, amid growing reports that eight of the party's 12 legislators plan to shift allegiance to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

UDP General Secretary Titosstarwell Chyne said the emergency meeting, which will be attended by party legislators, members of the autonomous district councils, presidents, secretaries, and CEC members, will discuss the reports of party legislators planning to switch sides.

However, Chyne said that the party has not received any official communication regarding defections.
