Jawai, June 21 -- union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman today visited Larnai, a village known for its centuries-old, GI-tagged black clay pottery tradition known as Khiew Ranei, in Meghalaya's West Jaintia Hills district.

Ms Sitharaman was briefed by the women artisans on their craft of black clay pottery through hundreds of years of tradition.

This craft is usually passed down by mothers to their daughters, hence the reason for the majority of potters being women, the men are mostly involved in sourcing the raw materials like clay, serpentine stones, tree bark for coloration purposes and provide other heavy manual work.
